Welcome to Flashpoint Bristol!
There is no need to book a session. So long as we’re open, you can come and climb – and keep climbing for as long as you wish!
Before you boulder with us, you’ll need to register! You can do this in the centre, but to speed things along – start the process now and pre-register here.
Please note – we have lockers and changing rooms but you will need your own padlock to secure your locker.
7+ yrs
Unlimited: stay as long as we're open!
All abilities
What to expect:
When you arrive you’ll be greeted at our front desk by our friendly team. We can give you a quick verbal tour of the building so you know where things are and we can tell you some quick tips to get you started.
You’ll want to wear athletic clothes that you can move around in, think yoga class or running gear. It’s a good idea to bring a water bottle too, although we do have drinks and snacks in our café!
The Basics of Bouldering:
Pick a route (they’re denoted by being holds of the same colour). Start at the bottom and make your way to the top.
To Start a Climb:
Start with your hands on the tagged holds and/or any other lower holds.
To Finish a Climb:
Match your hands on the top hold (in control) and then downclimb using any colour hold until you’re back on the mats. Jumping down is likely to cause injury.
Grades/Colours:
Lower number = easier. Higher number = harder. Green and green and purple coloured holds are always on the lower end and are great for first time climbers. all the other colours are used across the grade ranges, so check the tags at the bottom of the route. We usually set from around v0 all the way to V12. All our borders have a Griptonite tag on them as well. You can scan this and log the climb!
Basic Safety Things To Note:
Want More?:
If you’re keen to learn more and take your newfound love of climbing further, we’d recommend a taster session at our sister site, Redpoint Bristol.
We’re a massive bouldering gym in the heart of Bristol with a lot of boulders! Everything from VB intro climbs to first set out on, all the way up to techy slabs, dynamic World Cup comp blocs and crimpy V12s; we’ve got something for all styles and skill levels. On top of our “normal” boulders, we’ve got a range of training options and equipment, including two large circuit boards, multiple digital system boards, campus boards, and our recently expanded gym. You’ll find free weights, fingerboards, cable machines, rowing machines and pull-up bars in the gym – everything you need to train for that project!
To keep you fuelled up and full of beans, we’ve got a wonderful café in the building, serving hot food, delicious pizzas, expertly brewed barista coffee plus cakes, beers and shakes!
Unfortunately Flashpoint Bristol is not suitable for this age group. Freedog (located in the same building) and Redpoint Bristol (in Bedminster) have loads of options for younger kids so be sure to check them out.
An adult who has registered at our bouldering centre will normally be allowed to supervise one child aged between 7 – 11 years old OR two children IF at least one of them is over 12 years old.
The supervising adult must take full responsibility for the safety of the participants and complete the relevant paperwork. Supervision is permitted at the Duty Manager’s discretion and can be revoked at any time.
We do allow experienced teenagers to register to climb unsupervised, but they must get a parent to complete an enhanced parental consent form on top of their standard registration form.
If you are 14 or 15 your parent will need to visit the centre in order to complete the forms with you.
Independent climbing for all ages is at the duty managers discretion and can be revoked at any time.
Boulderers aged 16+ are welcome to climb independently at Flashpoint, provided you fill out the relevant registration forms. No matter what your experience, you will be asked to watch a short video induction, read our conditions of use and fill out a registration form.
